Printing Images Into Sculpture

I wanted to try some ideas Rachel De Joode has done within her work. However I used ordinary paper and the water in the plaster made the ink bleed out from the kaleidoscope images I made. I like the contrast that was created between the surfaces, more so in the first one using the image on an outer area rather than inner.

Some Latex Things

These were some of the practices I made for printing with latex for my show and listen, they worked out quite well but this was on a much smaller scale than I wanted. I also created a latex mould of a cast I made of shoes and a cardigan, I did want to re use the mould to create a new shape but it didnt work and ended up setting the mould into the plaster too. Ive create a plain flat mould of a flat jumper cast to maybe create a larger sheet.

Saturate, Solarize and Colour Balance

I've tried some stuff from Joey Holders practice like using computer software and the desktop as a canvas for my photos which i quite like. The others ive just over saturated and solarized to look really hyper aesthetic and over done so the colours look obviously edited, however ive sharpened some of the textures from clothing to bring it back to the organic body related texture. I love on some of them you can see bits of fluff and hair, i love the gross little details! My hair gets in most of my sculptures so ive just started leaving them in...

Exhibition Week

Exhibition week was really helpful and i got a lot of great feedback that ive been able to reflect on and help me progress onto the next stage. Its also made me think about what are the main points im interested in and to maybe focus on those for a while and experimenting without a fully grown idea to back it up, i think sometimes i get a bit too caught up in this and lose the playfulness in my work and i feel the best time to do this is my first year. 

I also put up my first 2 shelves by myself which im very proud of! Even if they are a bit slanted and wobbly.

Fuz and Lumps

So we have an exhibition week next week showing the work we've made so far at a more finalized stage. I find it really hard getting my work to an end point and figuring out titles because I very rarely consider what ive done any more than an exploratory stage.

Anyway, Ive been following on from a few experiments ive previously done but trying out things slightly differently. Ive been focusing a bit more on textures and imprinting onto materials.
I tried using clothing that's a bit more fluffy with looser fibres that can be pulled off. It definitely worked a lot better and created a layer of 'fur' on the cast. It really reminds me of the fuzz baby animals grow that's a bit patchy and wispy or a boys bad attempt at growing a 'man beard'. Hm.

The colour was a total accident, i forgot to add colour so its a bit of a mix but i don't really mind that you can see my mistake just makes this piece a bit more awkward. Plus the colours aren't exactly nice...

I wanted this to take the slight shape of something recognizable and used a plastic bottle although the fabric has mutated some of the shapes.

I did try out some usual stuff but trying to manipulate the shape they came out into more bodily forms and sizes that i think look kinda funny. I wanted to play on the idea of having 'a handfuls enough' replicating the idea people have of being sexy using lace tights but compared to the awkward bulky lump like shapes. Like my dad always says you cant polish a turd, very true dad.

I dont know if I like this one yet, I cast inside of a shoe and let the plaster spill out. I like that the top part is  an attempt at being in a precise form but soon goes wrong and spills out. It didnt take the fluffy texture as well for some reason, maybe its just the colour that doesnt let it show as strongly im not too sure. I really hate this colour though I dont know why i did it. I think this furthers my starting point of fat and the cankle 

(calf/ankle) effect, its probably quite literal but the fact that its cast from a shoe isnt as obvious.

This experiment was just me trying out textures and the lump type shapes, again the colour is horrible but i was only using what plaster i had left over.

Scavenging Challenge Part 2

For the second part of the scavenge challenge we had to re use the material we found and to then create something based around the word curate. When i think of the word curate i usually think of displaying a work that in some way enhances it or gives it a different feel in which ever place its presented. As we only had a designated space to work with we tried a few things out and tried not to be too precious about making it look appealing. We tried different things on a list we were giving such as piling it, collating it, organising it etc. I really enjoyed this task a lot more than the first as i had some ideas on where to go after thinking about previous tasks. 

I liked how piling the work work turned out as it created layers making you able to look through the top and see through each. It also flowed quite well allowing viewers to walk around the piece and look inside.

My favourite and the one we settled on was where we decided to make a vaguely recognizable structure creating walls with boards and glass. We created a slanted roof with 2 planks and put household items inside such as a washing machine, chairs. It worked really well as it lead you around the outside as though it was a path around a house and you could look through the glass inside. However we did leave a few random objects around which we should have cleared away as it was really distracting and the viewers found it quite confusing. 

Scavenging Challenge Part 1

So for this challenge we were given a list of random themes to follow such as collect things that are circular or collect things that look like clues. We were split into teams of 3 and given maps to walk around Nottingham collecting items we could find trying not to cross the boundary between collecting and stealing...

When we started we found it really hard, most items were just actual rubbish like food packets or bottles. Other stuff like leaves and conkers which i didnt really find that interesting. We walked past a broken washing machine but some men took it away plus we though it was a bit too far until we saw teams taking road signs and cones which we thought we definitely shouldnt be doing! Luckily we found some men who were throwing out a washing machine although it was very rusty and falling to pieces. We also collected things like sand bags and planks of wood.

I was actually really amazed at some of the items people had found, stuff that i definitely wouldnt consider rubbish such as chairs and teddies that were in really great condition. We were then given the task to assemble what we had found into one big pile that everyone could then use as a resource. There was some really amazing stuff like metres of blue pipe, beds and wooden crates. 

We tried out a few ways, although we had no theory behind what we were doing, it was really nice just to work freely with materials and not limit ourselves to what we could do and why we were doing it which can be a bit restricting.
