New Life Drawing Model

It was really challenging going from being use to drawing the female figure and shape to then drawing a man. At first i was still in that frame of mind and drawing the figure like a woman which took a while to get out of it. Its really helped to give me experience with drawing different people and gives me a variation of models to put in my portfolio. I prefer drawing with simple lines and shading becuase if i start to do more i always seem to make it look too heavy and it all blurs into one. I need to practice a lot more with shade and using it with depth and foreshortening. The first three were my first drawings which didnt go well, the basic shapes are okay but i dont like the tone i used or shading. I think i worked well with the foreshortening in the first picture although i could of made the foot bigger and used the tone of shading the help with the depth of the image.

Life Drawing With Dave

Just a quick post from Daves lesson in life drawing, he made us focus more on the angles and proportions showing us ways to mark them out precisely using measuring then adding in the details. This lesson really helped me with my proportions as i always struggle at the beginning of a session to get into it. He also showed us techniques with foreshortening, i reallllly hated working with foreshortening it always seemed to ruin my drawing and give the model odd proportions and angles. But after this lesson ive definitely got more confidence with it, Dave made the model face me for most of the session so i had to deal with it and it helped a lot.

Life Drawing

A few of my life drawing sketches from today i mainly tried to focus on sketching in the proportions and shapes of the body as quickly as i could to then focus on the detail. I found it challenging when the model would be sitting or laying facing towards me so i had to work around shortening the body while still keeping it in proportion. Although after i did the laying down pose and went to a stood up pose i found it more difficult to draw the model face on as i couldnt work as much with depth.

I think the proportions worked quite well with this pose and i managed to get the body angle okay, the models head was looking far to the right so i dont think i got that down very well and couldve drawn in some of the face to show the angle of it more.

The pose was facing mostly towards me so i couldnt see the rest of the body as much just mainly the front of the face and arms. I managed to scale the body down towards the end to show perspective although at first i made the leg thicker than the arm so i had to correct this. I also tried to avoid going too dark with my mark making towards the end as it needed to be darker towards the front. I got some of the lines in that went around the body like down the back and around her hip, John recommended that i join the lines to split the body into shapes to give it a better sense of depth and it think it looks a lot better, it makes the body look more realistic and gives it shape.

For this one i thought i would struggle with the position of the right foot as it was angled away and flat on the side of her foot but i think it went okay and looks how i wanted it to. I tried to mark in the lines of light and dark instead of blending them i made them look quite graphic and contrasting. The shadows look quite bold im not sure if i like it or not, other sketches ive done with this technique have worked our alright once theyre finished and look quite dark and contrasting against the white paper.

Life Drawing

So it poured it down today! We did our life drawing outside this lesson sat over looking the rooftops of construction and it was only raining slightly so everytime i made a mark with my pen the rain would land on my paper and make it bleed out but it had a nice effect. I was getting frustrated drawing buildings as it ment i had to draw quite graphic and straight edge lines which i cant do! So i tried drawing the fence with ivy growing around it which went better but i couldnt draw into great detail.

We moved inside when the rain started coming down and went into 2D to try drawing the skeletons with fabric around. I tried to focus more on using light and heavy mark making to create more depth and also wanted to try cross hatching which i saw in Leonardo Da Vincis painting i researched yesterday as it had good curves and dimension to it.

I think my use of depth went better than my last life drawing lesson as i tried to made the back darker going lighter towards the front. The ribcage i feel works quite well however the rest around it make it seem lost so i need to make more precise lines. I tried more with cross hatching which i felt worked well on the skull and bottom of the spine as it creates curves and makes the object seem more 3D.
